Moto tour Pamir Highway. Through Kyrgyzstan

Overview: The M41, known informally and more commonly as the Pamir Highway is a road traversing the Pamir Mountains through Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan with a length of over 1,600 km. It is the only continuous route through the difficult terrain of the mountains and is the main supply route to Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The route has been in use for millennia, as there are a limited number of viable routes through the high Pamir Mountains. The road formed one link of the ancient Silk Road trade route.

Continue by south road towards Kalai-Khumb, first region of Pamir. The more conservative attitudes of this region can be seen in the local style of dresses and beards, but the hospitality is just as welcoming.

Over a mountain pass to Kalai-Khumb and the scenery and people change again. Here the people are Badakhshan – not Tajiks but a number of separate tribal groups. Beautiful landscape and view of snow peaks on opposite side- “Afghanistan”. Distance 360 km.

Kalai-Khumb-Khorog

Continue by road from Kalai-Khumb to Khorog, the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO). On the Tajik side of the river, the road is asphalted and buildings have electricity and are constructed using metal and glass. On the Afghan side – only about 100 m distant – the road is a donkey track and buildings are mud and wood.Distance 250 km.
