Pamir Highway. Central Pamir trekking.

Head out for a trekking expedition on stunning trails through the heart of the Pamir Mountains. Designed for seasoned hikers, this trek uses the remote village of Bulunkul as gateway to the natural beauty of the central Pamirs. The region hosts innumerable amazing lakes. Among others, we visit the lakes of Yashilkul, Chapdarkul, Zarojkul and many other lakes. The trek provides a non-stop series of breathtaking landscapes and views. The trail goes up and down reaching heights of up to 4700 meters. The long and difficult trek allows for relaxation in natural hot springs at various places along the route. Furthermore, you can experience the local life in the mountain villages of Bulunkul, Bachor, Yamg and others.

Day Itinerary
Day 1

 

 

Dushanbe-Kulob-Kalai-Khumb.
From Dushanbe we will drive to Norak reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in Tajikistan. On the way visit of Hulbuk Fortress. Continue by south road towards Kalai-Khumb, first region of Pamir. The more conservative attitudes of this region can be seen in the local style of dresses and beards, but the hospitality is just as welcoming.

Over a mountain pass to Kalai-Khumb and the scenery and people change again. Here the people are Badakhshan – not Tajiks but a number of separate tribal groups. Beautiful landscape and view of snow peaks on opposite side- “Afghanistan”.

Day 2

 

Kalai-Khumb-Khorog

Continue by road from Kalai-Khumb to Khorog, the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO). From Kalai-Khumb, the road joins the river Panj, which forms Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan. This is a fascinating drive. On the Tajik side of the river, the road is asphalted and buildings have electricity and are constructed using metal and glass. On the Afghan side – only about 100 m distant – the road is a donkey track and buildings are mud and wood.  Overnight in hotel

Day 3

 

Khorog- Bachor

In the morning from Khorog drive over Gunt valley to the village Bachor. Once again, the landscape and people change as we slowly go higher into the Pamir High Plato. We have left behind the lush valley of the Wakhan and the Pamir tribe

Day 4

 

Bachor village, start trekking.

Today morning meet with trekking crew, half day trekking from village, along Andaravg river to the second summer village, near to Kavch. Distance 7-8 km. takes 3-4 h. Altitude (from 3180m up to 3450m) Overnight tents,

Trekking Day

From summer village we will walk near to lake Khachin, not long distance for better acclimatization.  Distance 8-9 km. takes 4-5 h. Altitude (from 3450m up to 3900m).  Overnight tents,

Trekking Day

From Khachin lake we are walk along Bartanly river to the lake Zoroshkul. Distance 10-11 km. takes 5-6 h. Altitude (from 3900m up to 4500m) Overnight tents,

Trekking Day

From Zoroshkul lake we walk to the Uchkul lakes, via Kulin and along of summer pastures of local people.  Distance 11-13 km. takes 5-6 h. Altitude (from4500m up to-4550m)Overnight tents,

From Uchkul lakes trek to the Chapdarkul lakes, via Irkh river.  Distance 11-12 km. takes 5-6 h. Altitude (from4550m down to-4530m)

From summer village today we will walk down along the river Langar, till the Rakhar.   Distance 11-12 km. takes 5-6 h. Altitude (from4490m down to-4270m) Overnight tents,

Trekking Day — Bulunkul

Today final trek day in Central Pamir Mountains, we will walk to the lake Yashilkul, meet with cars and drive to Bulunkul village.  Distance 8-9 km. takes 4-5 h. Altitude (from4270m down to-3700m)

Day 12 Bulunkul – Langar — Yamg

From Bulunkul drive to Wakhan valley, over pass Khar-Gush, via villages Langar, Hissar, Zong and Vrang. Dist. 220 km takes 5-6 h

Day 13

 Yamg – Khorog

Today continue explore Wakhan valley. Visit Yamchun fortress. It is the main notable fortification built in Wakhan to secure Western Pamirs in “Silk Road” time.   Drive to Yamchun and walk along a ridge to see the Zoroastrian “Fortress of Fire Worshippers”. Further up the hillside is the hot springs at Bibi Fatima. It is possible to take a natural steam bath in a rocky cave. Final driving to Khorog.

Day 14 Khorog – Kalaihumb

In the morning we will start our driving to Kalai-Khumb. On your way drive along the Panj River, enjoy the spectacular view of mountains; through the river see the way of life in Afghan side. From Khorog, the road joins the river Panj, which forms natural Tajikistan border with Afghanistan. This is a fascinating drive. On the Tajik side of the river, the road is asphalted and buildings have electricity and are constructed using metal and glass. On the Afghan side – only about 100 m distant – the road is a donkey track and buildings are built of mud and wood. Distance 260  km. Takes 7-8 h

Day 15 Kalaihumb – Tavildara – Dushanbe

We will drive through Sagirdasht Pass (Khaburabad). Beautiful landscape and view of snow peaks and several passes. Stop in several villages to introduce with local life. Here the people are Badakhshan – not Tajiks but a number of separate tribal groups, each with their own language. Unlike their Sunni neighbors, the Badakhshanis are Ismaili, followers of the Aga Khan. Attitudes and dress are a little more liberal in Badakhshan Distance 310 km. Takes 8-9 h
